Biased Thoughts: AEW Dynamite #198
TD Garden, Boston. Massachusetts. 9k Tickets Sold. July 19th 2023
Jack Perry vs HOOK for the FTW Championship (***1/2) This was really good eventhough the music choice is weird for Jack Perry, been a hateable nepo baby is the right way to push him as a heel. Good business.
Britt Baker squash, not mush to say LMAO. I gues she will face Toni Storm in Dynamite 200 in Tampa.
Adam Cole & MJF vs Sammy Guevara & Daniel García in the Final of the Blind Tag Team Elimination Tournament (***3/4) This matches and segments are walking a fine line, but this match was so great and it relied on really basic character work that always works as well of having really charm interactions between Cole and MJF. Roddy in a neck brace is hilarious.
The Golden Elite vs Blackpool Combat Club, Konosuke Takeshita & PAC in a Blood & Guts match (****1/4) The violence and overall work was tremendous in this match (Ibushi wasn´t that great but understandable after long periods of inactivity), creative ideas and a very polemical finish that opens a lot of possibilities. Mox and Kenny were (again) amazing with for the love of the game performances that kept the violence and heat in the match on a high note in front of one of the hottest Boston crowds AEW has had in their history.
… But I had two big issues with this match:
- The Director/Producer missed a ton of important shit. Dude missed when Mox surrendered the match to save Yuta, basically the second most important spot in the match.
- One of AEW weaknesses when doing this match is getting out of the fucking cage and even when it helped to do a very neat spot I prefer to keep them all lock, been obligated to make the other tap out to get out of the match. That has happened in all three Blood & Guts matches.
PAC and Takeshita are 100% heels, and this betrayals and post show peace between BCC and The Elite makes Blackpool Combat Club close to a babyface turn, something that would be very interesting mainly to feud with a new faction that is taking form… The Callis Family.
The Callis Family made at the moment only by Takeshita and Don for sure will add new members, one of my headcanon/fantasy booking scenarios is that Aussie Open joins them. Chris Jericho would be interesting to put him in because it brings storylines with Guevara and García. I´m getting too ahead of myself or they are giving the AEW World Championship to this stable and to Takeshita specifically? They haven´t set up directly to someone this amount of babyfaces to feud, here are the ones that come to mind:
- The Golden Elite: Kenny Omega, Hangman Page and Kota Ibushi.
- Blackpool Combat Club: Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli.
- If Jericho joins: Daniel García and Sammy Guevara.
Either way, great main event that open a lot of stories to be told, and maybe we are infront of the new big heel faction for AEW.
Rating of The Show: 8.5/10
Enjoying the Blood & Guts match means that I really liked the show, Cole and MJF segments have been really mixed but win me over when the match is fun and the crowd is molten for almost every interaction between this two. Really looking forward to what feels the beginning of the Road To All In and All Out. I´M FUCKING READY!
Extra Notes:
- Man, Moxley and Omega are crazy.
- I´m starting to think Punk will get a World Championship match at All Out, his character is interesting to say the least, keep an eye on that.
- I need The Elite (Omega, Hangman & The Bucks) to sign those extensions quick man. Tony Khan, give them the bag!
